Cinnamon Life Marks 15 million Safe Working Hours

3rd June 2020; Cinnamon Life, Colombo’s largest mixed development marks a major milestone of achieving 15 million man-hours without a lost time injury (LTI) from January 2019 to date.

Cinnamon Life has made continuous endeavours towards a safe environment through the implementation of the OSHSAS and ISO standards (OHSAS 18001:2007 & ISO 14001:2004) to promote a safe and productive working environment. In achieving the safety standards, the Senior Health & Safety Engineer Sumith Kalanasiri, shared his experience, “We adhere to simple yet exemplary guidelines to ensure safety at the construction site. This includes a mandatory check of the safety procedures and safety gear (safety helmets, boots and overalls) when entering the premise at any given time and compulsory briefings to ensure awareness of all ongoing and upcoming operations at the site. We have 60 health and safety officers to monitor groups of workers throughout shifts – this is a unique element that has contributed to achieve a safe environment.”

To achieve this, the Development deploys three simple measures. The first is the training programme conducted every day, six days a week. The second is in investing in safe equipment such as the mast-climbers that provide a safe platform for work on heights. The last is the implementation of the safety measures. This is done through protocol officers who make sure the location is safe for the movement of equipment.

Apart from the safety standards mentioned above, Cinnamon Life has addressed health and safety measures in relation to COVID-19 over the recent weeks and is now at the forefront of resuming construction after several months of lockdown post COVID with its new guidelines. Construction resumed following a holistic approach to sanitation and physical distancing required in relation to the site which commenced operation with 500 workers. Temperature checks and scans, routine hygiene checks, staggering of work and enhanced sanitary measures are among the steps taken for workers on-site, along with guidelines for the usage of lifts, cafeteria and other gathering areas.
